A prominent 43-year-old attorney, along with three administrators aged between 33 and 35, found themselves in custody after being detained by the Nelspruit-based Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team on Wednesday, 2nd May 2024.
The charges against them include fraud and impersonation of an attorney.
The arrest stems from numerous complaints received by the Hawks regarding estates administered by the suspects.
Over a span of three years, victims had engaged the services of the alleged attorney, only to discover that promised payouts never materialized.
Further investigation revealed that the attorney in question lacked legitimacy, with the aid of his administrators recruiting individuals unsuspectingly involved in estate settlements.
Using obtained Letters of Executors from the Master of High Court, they pocketed funds meant for beneficiaries.
Following the conclusion of the investigation, warrants of arrest were executed promptly on Wednesday. The quartet is scheduled to make their initial appearance before the Nelspruit District Court on Friday, 3rd May 2024.
Major General Gerber, the Provincial Head of the Hawks, commended the whistleblowers for their bravery in stepping forward.
He also praised the investigative team for their diligence in swiftly resolving the case, which left over 16 families financially compromised.
In a plea to potential additional victims, Major General Gerber urged them to come forward and report similar experiences to Warrant Officer Portia Sanderson or Commander Col Jerry Maphanga, ensuring confidentiality for all informants.
He concluded with a steadfast commitment to the public, stating, “the Hawks shall investigate and arrest all criminals who threaten the safety and livelihood of our communities without fear, favour or prejudice.”
